Nowadays, when we talk about putting ourselves first, or saying no to others, or perhaps even choosing to spend a night in rather than go out with friends, we are often told we are selfish. Pretty ridiculous when you really think about it, right? Personally, I have noticed an increasing effect society has had on people's self-perceptions that they are selfish if they choose to prioritize their own needs or comfort. In reality, choosing yourself does not necessarily equal to oneself being selfish; doing so intentionally to engage in self-care is a vital part of one's mental health. You could even argue that choosing yourself for a day or evening of self-care is actually selfless because you are taking care of yourself, which also allows you to later show up better and more mentally resilient for those around you.
